The Biggest Mistakes I Made During My Placement Journey
Hi, this is Sharmi. I’m a Computer Science graduate.
As a fresher graduating in 2026, I want my juniors to understand these important lessons before entering placements.
This is not a success story. This is a story about the mistakes I made during my placement journey—and what they taught me.
1. Don’t Miss Opportunities After Getting One Offer
When the first company came to my college, I got selected.
At that moment, I felt like everything was sorted. I was happy, relieved, and honestly… a little overconfident. I thought, “I already have a job. I can relax now.”
That mindset slowly changed my actions.
When more companies started coming, I didn’t apply to all of them. I started filtering:
This role is not exactly my skill set Location is not ideal Salary is similar to what I already have
So I skipped them.
At that time, it felt like a smart decision.
But I didn’t understand something very important— getting an offer is not the same as getting onboarded.
Time passed. Companies came and went. And I was still waiting.
That’s when reality hit me.
Even if you have one offer, keep applying.
Don’t stop until you are fully settled.
2. Don’t Stick to Only One Domain
The next things was , I was focusing only on one domain—web development.
I had done an internship in it, so I thought sticking to it was the right choice. I didn’t explore other areas. I didn’t try to expand my skill set.
Later, I realized how limiting that was.
Because when opportunities came in other domains, I couldn’t even apply. Not because I wasn’t capable—but because I never tried to learn beyond one path.
Don’t restrict yourself.
Try to build skills in at least 2–3 areas (like Java, Web Development, Basics of Cloud, etc.).
3. Never Stop Learning Beyond What You're Taught
Another mistake I made was stopping my learning at “what was taught.”
During my internship, I learned a lot. It was a great experience.
But I only focused on what I was asked to do. I didn’t go deeper. I didn’t explore beyond the training.
And that made a difference.
Because companies don’t just look for what you were taught. They look for what you learned on your own.
That’s where I fell short.
Always learn beyond what is given to you.
That’s what makes you stand out.
Looking back, all these mistakes came from one thing— lack of awareness.
So guys be prepared for your placements!
Lets grow together
